This reminds me of one of my most powerful experiences with music journalism. In the 70s I was growing up and discovering jazz, but I despised avant-garde/free jazz.

Until I came upon the book "The 101 Best Jazz Albums" by Len Lyons. In the section on free jazz, Lyons explained the artists' intentions, provided guidelines for how to approach them, and taught me to appreciate this music. And, from there, I went on to love it. A complete one-eighty for me, all down to one thoughtful writer.
